Memory is the mental activity to retrieve and recall information that you have learned or experienced. While most people have an outstanding ability to remember past life experiences and small facts, others have a difficulty remembering things as simple as the color of the shirt they wore yesterday.

Memory loss can result from severe injury, illness, or from high stress levels. Everyone has the ability to recall information they have either learned from experience or from classes they took in school. However the stress of work, of being in a relationship and/or school can cause people to temporarily forget things, such as important birthdays, meetings or even things they have wrote on their to-do-list.

A gentle reminder will usually jog your memory. Unfortunately in this self-centered world, there are not many people who will go out of their way to remind you of important meetings or events.

There are ways you can improve your memory, even amidst your busy life schedule. The more you work your brain, the better you will be able to process and remember information. First of all, pay attention to instructions and lessons.

It is impossible to remember something if you never learned it. Do not multitask when you are supposed to be listening to a message as you will distract very easily. The best advice is to find a quite place where you can study or listen to a tape recorded lesson. That way you will not be interrupted.

Tailor information to fit your learning style. If you are a great visual learner, but not the greatest listener, record speeches or lessons on a notepad and later organize your notes in order of sub-topic discussed.

Read out loud what you have learned or narrate the information to your parents or spouse. This will help you learn key important information quickly. Rehearsing the information, will also enable you to process and remember the information.

Relate information to what you already know. This can be a matter of connecting the new information to older information in a meaningful way. If the material is complex, learn and master the basics first before you tackle that harder material. In mathematics, students are taught information and problem solving skills in order from easiest to hardest.

Learning the basics first will help you remember them when you come to the more difficult tasks.
Most importantly, always keep a positive attitude and be motivated. Tell yourself that you want to learn, that you need to learn and the information is important for you to learn.

Always give yourself encouragement, especially when you think the lesson is too challenging. Remember, you can learn anything when you put your mind to it.
